Delta Air Lines begins nonstop service from New York-JFK to Antigua and Barbuda

Delta Air Lines launches its nonstop service from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Antigua and Barbuda as part of its continued expansion in the Caribbean.

This flight complements Delta’s existing nonstop service to Antigua and Barbuda from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

A prime spot for snorkeling and scuba diving among spectacular coral reef, Antigua (pronounced An-tee’ga) and Barbuda are two islands that comprise one country located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Barbuda also offers bird watching enthusiasts a significant bird sanctuary in the region.

“Delta continues to open new Caribbean routes out of JFK to bring New Yorkers closer to beautiful beaches, sun, and relaxation,” said Christophe Didier, Delta’s vice president of Sales and Government Affairs in Latin America and the Caribbean for Delta Air Lines. “We have started more than 10 new routes in the Caribbean basin in the last couple of years, many of them departing from JFK as part of our continued international expansion.”

Delta Expands Africa Presence with First Nonstop Flights between Atlanta and Lagos

Delta Air Lines today inaugurates the only flights operated by a major U.S. airline between the United States and Nigeria with daily nonstop service between the world’s largest airline hub in Atlanta and Lagos, Nigeria – one of Africa’s largest business centers. Delta, the only US airline to fly to Africa, already offers service between Atlanta and Johannesburg, South Africa (via Dakar, Senegal), and between New York-JFK and Accra, Ghana.

“We are pleased to begin our next wave of service expansion between the United States and Africa,“ said Glen Hauenstein, executive vice president – Network Planning and Revenue Management. “As a leader in global aviation, we continuously look to develop high potential new markets. Africa has a significant and rapidly growing demand, and we’re proud to be the only U.S. airline to offer service to the continent.

“Whether you are flying for business or pleasure, we offer our customers a wide variety of destinations through the world’s largest connecting gateway operated by Delta in Atlanta. No longer do you have to connect in a European gateway in order to fly to Nigeria.”

During 2008, Delta will add a second daily nonstop flight between the United States and Nigeria with service between Lagos and New York-JFK, beginning June 9, 2008*. Delta also will add other African routes in 2008, including flights to Nairobi, Kenya (via Dakar, effective June 2)*; Cape Town, South Africa (via Dakar, effective June 3)*; and Cairo, Egypt (effective June 4)*. With this expansion, Delta will serve a total of seven African cities in six countries.

Delta’s Lagos service is one of six new trans-Atlantic routes to be launched this year, strengthening Delta’s presence as a leading carrier across the Atlantic. The flight is an integral part of the airline’s strategy of international growth to offer more nonstop departures to more destinations worldwide.

Delta customers flying to Nigeria will enjoy the comfort of the widebody Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with the capacity to carry up to 214 passengers, 36 of which are in Delta’s award-winning BusinessElite® class, featuring all-leather sleeper seats with 152 cm of legroom, innovative food offerings designed by celebrity chefs and industry-leading, on-demand personal in-seat entertainment. Economy class customers also will benefit from new all-leather economy seats, amenity kits, enhanced food offerings and a complimentary cocktail with each meal.

Delta Expands China Route

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) is expanding its application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate the first and only nonstop flights between the U.S. Southeast and China to include nonstop flights between the world’s largest airline hub in Atlanta and both Beijing and Shanghai. Both routes would fill a critical gap in air service for the 65 million residents of the U.S. Southeast who currently lack nonstop air service to China.

“Nonstop service to Beijing and Shanghai will establish Atlanta as a powerful new gateway to the Far East, while providing the greatest connectivity and convenience for passengers from across the U.S., as well as Central and South America and the Caribbean,” said Delta Chief Operating Officer Jim Whitehurst. “Many U.S. carriers will likely apply for nonstop service to China; however, Delta’s application makes it clear that Atlanta and the U.S. Southeast are best positioned to become the next gateway to China.”

At an event held today at Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin joined representatives from the Atlanta Metro Chamber of Commerce and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to unveil a poster-sized copy of an online petition being signed by supporters of Delta’s proposed service and "Next Gateway to China” campaign (www.nextgatewaytochina.com). The poster includes paw print “signatures” of Zoo Atlanta’s three giant pandas – Lun Lun, Yang Yang, and Mei Lan – whose names join the more than 20,000 signatures already received since the campaign launched last month.

“In Atlanta at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Delta Air Lines is well-positioned to provide Atlanta and the entire Southeast with the best nonstop service to China,” said Mayor Franklin. “We join today with leaders of business and government and Atlanta’s own giant pandas to show our support for Delta’s new service to China from Atlanta, a route that is long overdue. We also express our gratitude to Delta for their continued support of Atlanta and for selecting our city as the new gateway for nonstop flights to Beijing and Shanghai.”

Delta, which serves more worldwide destinations than any other carrier, is the largest U.S. international carrier without nonstop service to China. The Southeastern United States is the largest region of the country without a direct connection to China.

“The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce wholeheartedly supports Delta’s bid to provide businesses in the Southeast with much needed access to China,” said Sam A. Williams, president of the Chamber. “Nonstop routes to the political and economic capitals of the most populous country in the world would be a home run for businesses in Atlanta and across the Southeast.”

Said Ben DeCosta, general manager, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport: “Delta’s plans to link Atlanta -- the world’s busiest passenger gateway -- with nonstop service to Beijing and Shanghai would not only be beneficial for our anchor airline, but would also be a tremendous economic asset for the airport, the city of Atlanta and all of our stakeholders in Georgia and the Southeast. We strongly support Delta’s plans to make Atlanta and the U.S. Southeast the next gateway to China.”

Delta plans to provide daily nonstop service between Atlanta and China using its flagship Boeing 777 aircraft in a two-class configuration featuring BusinessElite, Delta’s award-winning business class service. Additionally, Delta plans to introduce fully horizontal lie-flat seats on its Boeing 777 fleet beginning in 2008, with new in-seat entertainment system offering on-demand, digital video and music at every suite.
