About Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines' history can be traced back to May 1947, when Malayan Airways operated its first commercial flight linking Singapore with Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. The airline was later renamed Malaysian Airways Limited in1963 and Malaysia-Singapore Airlines in 1966, which then split in 1972, creating Malaysian Airline System (since renamed Malaysia Airlines) and Singapore Airlines. Over a period of more than half a century, Singapore Airlines has earned a reputation as an innovative market leader, combining a quality product with excellent service. Singapore Airlines' passenger route network extends to 65 destinations in 35 countries. Together with its airline subsidiaries, Singapore Airlines Cargo and regional airline SilkAir, the network grows to 98 destinations in 40 countries, serving Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East, the South West Pacific, and Africa. Singapore Airlines has one of the youngest fleets of any major airline, with an average age of just over 6 years. Its fleet of 90 passenger aircraft includes B747-400, various models of the B777 and A340-500. Excellence in customer service has been integral to Singapore Airlines' success and its superb inflight service is the cornerstone of its reputation for customer service and hospitality. Singapore Airlines has developed a reputation for being an industry trend-setter. The list of industry-leading innovations includes being the first to offer free headsets, a choice of meals and free drinks in Economy Class in the 1970s, and the first with satellite-based inflight telephones in 1991. In 2001, the Airline was the first to offer audio and video on demand (AVOD) capabilities on the KrisWorld inflight entertainment system in all classes. Singapore Airlines has also taken inflight dining to new heights with the formation of its International Culinary Panel and World Gourmet Cuisine. In 2004 it launched the world's longest non-stop commercial flight to Los Angeles, and subsequently New York using the A340-500 aircraft. At the end of 2006, Singapore Airlines unveiled a suite of next-generation cabin products that comprised the industry's widest First and Business Class seats with fully flat beds, a more spacious Economy Class seat, and an enhanced KrisWorld inflight entertainment system featuring over 1000 entertainment options and a comprehensive suite of office applications. In 2007, Singapore Airlines will be the first airline in the world to operate the Airbus A380 super jumbo when it joins the fleet. The care and attention that Singapore Airlines offers its customers, symbolised by the Singapore Girl, has earned the Airline many industry and travel awards, including Conde Nast Traveller's "Best International Airline" award for 18 years.
